    News date: September 23, 2026

Qualcomm announced an agreement to acquire robotics software company PickNik on September 23, 2026. PickNik is a major steward of MoveIt, an open-source framework used for robot manipulation. The proposed deal is subject to customary closing conditions. [1]

Connecting robot planning with onboard computing

Qualcomm says it expects closer integration between MoveIt and its Dragonwing robotics and Arduino platforms. It also states that MoveIt 1 and MoveIt 2 will remain open and community-driven, with continued support for third-party hardware. [1]

PickNik founder Dave Coleman explains the technical reasoning in a separate announcement. His team is combining learned AI with established motion-planning methods, including collision checking. He argues that reliable operation requires software and hardware to be designed with each other’s constraints in mind. PickNik also says customer support and hardware independence will continue. [2]

Why developers will watch the integration closely

Our assessment is that the value for developers will depend on the path from a working demonstration to a reliable installation. Recognizing an object is only part of a manipulation task. A complete system must decide how to approach it, avoid obstacles, and execute the motion within the machine’s operating limits.

Closer coordination between planning software and computing hardware could reduce integration work. For a small robotics team, that might make an unfamiliar arm or camera easier to support. The benefit would need to appear in practical documentation, compatible releases, and repeatable results on real equipment.

The open-source commitments also give the community specific points to follow. Developers can watch whether contributions remain welcome and whether support continues across different hardware providers. The announcement sets out those intentions; future releases and project governance will show how they are carried through.
